Welcome to the Ukulele Shop! Ok, so we think ukuleles are pretty cool. (Ukeleles, ukes, and ukoolaid are fine too.) George Harrison traveled with two 4-string ukuleles at all times. If he needed two the rest of us mortals must need at least three. Which brings us to the first maxim of the casual or professional ukulele user: You can never have too many ukuleles.

Of all the ukulele brands, we've been most impressed by Kala Ukuleles. We won't name names, but not all ukulele brands produce quality ukuleles. Here's some things to watch out for when ukulele shopping:

• Shoddy construction that won't last. A local teacher recently told us her classroom set of Kala Dolphin Ukes was still alive and kicking (flipping?) after untold years of abuse by her young ukuleleists. Get a brand that lasts.
• Ungeared tuning pegs. Let's just say good luck getting your ukulele in tune without geared tuning pegs like all Kala Ukuleles have. And an out of tune uke makes for a...
• Cheesy toy-like sound. Kala's uber-affordable dolphin ukes are real instruments that stay in tune and project like trumpets. Meanwhile Kala mahogany ukuleles sing with a sound so sweet it makes your teeth hurt (in a good way). Ditto with the Kala Travel Ukes, even though they're only 1 3/4" thick. Fits in your suitcase between your socks!
