Uke Crazy....
George Harrison reportedly traveled with two ukuleles at all times. If he needed two the rest of us mortals must need at least three. Which brings us to the first maxim of the casual or professional ukulele user: You can never have too many ukuleles.
Here's some things to look for when ukulele shopping:
- Quality construction. A local teacher recently told us her classroom set of Kala Dolphin Ukes was still alive and kicking (flipping?) after untold years of abuse by her young ukuleleists. Get a brand that lasts.
- Geared tuning pegs. Look for the little clockwork like gears on the headstock of your prospective uke. They may be hidden under a metal cover. They'll make tuning your uke a lot easier. Trust us on this one.
- Sweet sweet sound. Every uke sounds different, even in the same model, so try several. Don't settle for muffled or muddy. Yours is the one that rings out clear, sweet, and live.
